Welcome to Ink & Ivy. This page explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what choices you have. We've tried to write this in plain language rather than dense legal text.

1. Who we are

Ink & Ivy is a personal reading and book review platform. It's currently operated by a single independent developer based in India, not a company. If you have questions about this policy, you can reach out via the contact method listed at the bottom of this page.

2. What information we collect

Account information

  • Username and password (stored securely your password is never stored in plain text; it's hashed before saving)
  • If email login/verification is added in the future, this policy will be updated before that feature goes live, and you'll be asked to provide an email at that time, not before

Content you create

  • Reviews, ratings, and comments you write
  • Books you save to lists (want to read, currently reading, finished, DNF, custom lists)
  • Favorite books, reading goals, reading challenge participation
  • Book club messages and community shelf contributions
  • Your profile bio, favorite genre, and uploaded avatar image (if you choose to add one)

Automatically collected information

  • Basic activity data used to power streaks, XP, and reading challenge leaderboards (e.g., the dates you were active on the site)
  • We do not currently use third-party analytics or advertising trackers

AI feature data

If you use the "For You" recommendations or Book Trivia features, a summary of your reading activity (favorite books, finished books, genre preferences) is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate personalized results. This data is used only to generate that response and is not used by us or Anthropic to build a profile of you beyond that single request.

3. How we use your information

We use the information above to:

  • Operate your account (login, saved lists, reviews)
  • Power social features (following, book clubs, comments)
  • Generate AI-powered recommendations and trivia, when you choose to use those features
  • Maintain basic site security (e.g., rate-limiting to prevent abuse)

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers.

4. Third-party services we use

  • Google Books API used to search for and display book information (titles, covers, descriptions, publisher info). We don't control how Google collects data when you interact with their API results; see Google's Privacy Policy for details on their practices.
  • Anthropic API (Claude) used to power the "For You" recommendations and Book Trivia features, as described above.
  • Neon (PostgreSQL hosting) our database provider, which stores your account and content data securely.
  • Hosting provider hosts the application itself.

5. Your choices and rights

  • Account deletion: You can permanently delete your account and associated data at any time from your Settings page. This action cannot be undone.
  • Private profiles: You can set your profile to private, which limits who can see your activity to people you approve as followers.
  • Data access: If you'd like a copy of the data associated with your account, you can contact us using the details below.
  • Data correction: You can update your bio, avatar, and other profile details at any time from your profile settings.

If you're located in the EU/UK or another region with data protection laws (such as GDPR), you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. We aim to honor these requests promptly.

As this app is operated from India, we also aim to handle your data in line with India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), which grants similar rights including the right to access, correct, and request erasure of your personal data, and to withdraw consent for its processing at any time.

6. Data retention

We retain your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data and content are removed from our active database. Some information may persist in backups for a limited period before being fully purged.

7. Children's privacy

Ink & Ivy is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country to consent to data processing without parental permission). We do not knowingly collect data from children under this age.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app grows or adds features (for example, if email-based login is introduced). We'll update the "Last updated" date above when changes are made, and significant changes will be noted on the site.
